Marcel Wanders (1963) graduated cum laude from the Arnhem Academy of Art and Design, after being expelled from the Design Academy Eindhoven. He then went on to study at Academies in Hasselt, Maastricht and Eindhoven. His designs distinguish themselves by a character both poetic and conceptual. Nowadays Wanders works from his own design studio, Marcel Wanders Studio, where he develops and realises new ideas and products on assignment. He is also the director of Moooi. Wanders became internationally recognised because of his Knotted Chair design, which combined high tech materials with low tech production methods.
In the design world, Wanders is seen as an eccentric outsider and is even called the “Lady Gaga of design”. It is Wanders’ mission to “create a world of love, to live with passion and make our wildest dreams come true”. This translates into adventurous, exciting and polarising designs, which also do not fail to charm and entertain the user due to the ingenuity of the products. In his designs, he often combines innovative materials and techniques with references to historical styles and archetypes. This way, the user can easily understand the product and because of its timelessness and great quality, enjoy the design for many years to come.
