Henk Stallinga graduated from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 1993, and established Studio Stallinga that same year. The Studio Stallinga team works on a broad variety of projects ranging from lighting to clocks, technical appliances to outdoor furniture, home accessories to public spaces. The Studio’s work forms a balance between product functionality and imagination. The works invite the user to reconsider the industrial product and to challenge what people are accustomed to. Furthermore, by focusing on associations and combining material, form and technique, new meaning to the product-user experience is formulated. Stallinga works for many international clients.
The work of Stallinga is internationally recognised and can be found in the permanent collections of museums worldwide such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 2013, Studio Stallinga realised the installation ‘Waiting in The Hallway’ in the Music Theatre in Amsterdam. The installation consists of 16 Wall Seats which are visually gripping and seemingly dangerous seat sculptures. However, the accurately calculated balance ensures that the chairs can actually be used practically. ‘Waiting in The Hallway’ is part of an international exhibition which will be on display in Japan in 2015.
